ROYAL OAK, Mich. — A Royal Oak School Board meeting Thursday night erupted into a heated debate over a newly approved Turning Point USA chapter at the high school, with most speakers urging the district to shut the club down and accusing it of promoting extremist ideology.

Parents and students filled the meeting room to voice their concerns. Several described Turning Point USA as fascist or harmful to the school environment. One speaker warned that allowing the club would “radicalize students.” Others said the group spreads political division and does not belong on campus.
A few attendees defended the club. One speaker said Turning Point is dedicated to teaching students about anti communism and political education, not radicalizing anyone. Supporters urged the board to respect students’ rights to form organizations regardless of their beliefs.
Braxtyn spoke out at the meeting Thursday night telling the school board about the threats she and other members have received.
The controversy follows an exclusive interview I conducted earlier this week with student member Braxtyn and her mother, Brandy. They said the club, founded about two weeks ago, has already received online threats and harassment from fellow students. According to Braxtyn, one threat in a group chat said the club’s creator “was going to get burned.” She also described being shoulder bumped in class and targeted during a protest.
Despite the backlash, the school district said Thursday that it must allow the Turning Point USA chapter because public schools cannot restrict student clubs based on political viewpoint. District officials said the club followed the proper procedures and that federal free speech protections require equal access.
Many speakers remained frustrated with that explanation and urged the board to revisit its policies. Others said the community should allow students to discuss political ideas without fear.
The Turning Point USA chapter is still planning to hold its first official meeting on November 10. Members say they expect protests but plan to invite administrators to ensure a peaceful start.

I’m thrilled they’re keeping it! People just don’t want to know the truth or hear the truth, so they feel threatened but it’s perfectly ok for them to tell your students how to think and what gender you are, enough is enough!
Those protesting are clueless. They certainly have not watched Kirk videos or researched his viewpoints. Or, if they have - they’re REALLY clueless.
