Tuscola County, Michigan sheriff apologizes after pepper spray release impacts elementary school
Release of expired pepper spray during disposal exercise sent fumes onto school property, prompting sheriff’s review of procedures
CARO, Mich. (Sept. 9, 2025) — The Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office has apologized after expired pepper spray canisters were discharged on department property Tuesday, sending spray drifting onto a nearby elementary school.
Sheriff’s officials said the canisters were set off in the back lot of the department, but an “unexpected amount” of spray carried beyond the property line and reached Schall Elementary School. Students and staff reported irritation to their eyes, skin and noses.
Pepper spray, made from oleoresin capsicum — a natural extract from chili peppers — contains compounds that can cause temporary burning, coughing and sneezing when dispersed. While symptoms are typically short-lived, officials said those with asthma or respiratory conditions may experience stronger effects and should seek medical attention if necessary
.“We regret that this incident impacted students, staff, and their day-to-day activities,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our community, especially our children, is our highest priority, and we take full responsibility for the unintended effects of our actions.”

The department said it is reviewing and revising procedures for disposing of chemical agents to prevent similar incidents. Officials are also in communication with Schall Elementary to provide support and address any concerns.
The Sheriff’s Office encouraged anyone exposed to the spray to move into fresh air, rinse eyes and skin with cool water, and seek medical care if severe symptoms develop.

Obviously, no one considered any wind and where the spray might be carried. As one with asthma, the idea of pepper spray scares me. My asthma is generally controlled, I no longer own a rescue inhalent.
I was police pepper sprayed by a friend of mine. I gave permission of course to see what it's like.
It's nasty with coughing and eyes water and burn, but NO Lasting effects. Pretty safe stuff but takes 15-20 minutes to dissipate!
