TITLE IX CONTROVERSY:
Michigan finds itself at the center of a national debate over Title IX, the federal law passed in 1972 that prohibits discrimination based on sex in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. Recent interpretations and changes to the law, particularly surrounding gender identity, have ignited controversy, dividing communities and political leaders across the state.
I interviewed Great Education Initiative Director Monica Yatooma about a lawsuit her group just filed against the Department of Education.
The heart of the controversy lies in the Biden administration’s proposed changes to Title IX, expanding protections to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Advocates argue these changes are necessary to protect LGBTQ+ students from harassment and discrimination in schools, while critics contend the updates infringe upon women’s rights and create confusion regarding school sports, restrooms, and locker rooms.
Political and Parental Pushback
The proposed changes have sparked significant backlash from conservative groups, parents, and even some educators. Opponents argue that the new guidelines, particularly those allowing transgender students to compete in sports aligned with their gender identity, undermine fairness in women’s athletics.
A coalition of parents in Michigan, many aligned with conservative and religious groups, has been particularly vocal. They claim the changes would “erase” decades of progress in women’s sports by allowing biological males to compete, creating an unfair playing field for female athletes.
“Title IX was established to protect women, not to harm them,” said Sarah Matthews, a mother of two student-athletes in Grand Rapids. “We are fighting for fairness and for the future of our daughters’ opportunities in sports.”
Matthews’ concerns are echoed by Republican lawmakers in Michigan, who have introduced bills to restrict transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports. They argue the federal government's overreach threatens local control of school policies and creates safety and privacy concerns for students in locker rooms and bathrooms.
Supporters See It as a Matter of Civil Rights
On the other side, LGBTQ+ advocates argue that the changes to Title IX are crucial for ensuring equality and protecting transgender students from discrimination. Supporters of the Biden administration’s stance emphasize that students should be allowed to compete in sports and use facilities that match their gender identity, without fear of being ostracized or singled out.
“The reality is that transgender students face disproportionate bullying and harassment in schools,” said Andrea Carson, an LGBTQ+ advocate in Detroit. “Title IX was designed to protect all students from discrimination, and that includes transgender students. Denying them access to sports or restrooms consistent with their gender identity is discriminatory.”
Some educators and school administrators have also expressed support for the changes, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and ensuring a safe learning environment for all students.
“We want every student to feel welcome, respected, and protected, no matter who they are,” said Eric Lawson, a superintendent from Ann Arbor. “These changes to Title IX help ensure that we’re upholding those values.”
Legal Challenges Loom
As the debate rages on, legal challenges to the proposed Title IX changes seem inevitable. Several states, including Michigan, are seeing lawsuits filed by both conservative and liberal groups. Religious schools and institutions are also raising concerns, claiming the changes infringe upon their religious freedoms.
For Michigan schools, the uncertainty surrounding Title IX is creating a complicated landscape. While some districts are taking a wait-and-see approach, others are proactively adopting policies in line with the proposed changes. This has led to inconsistencies across the state, with students in some districts receiving more protections than others.
A Debate Far From Over
With Michigan caught in the middle of this heated national debate, the future of Title IX in the state remains uncertain. As the Biden administration pushes forward with the proposed changes and legal battles ensue, the conversation over how best to balance the rights of transgender students with concerns over fairness in women’s sports shows no signs of slowing down.
What is clear is that this issue will continue to be a flashpoint in Michigan’s education and political landscape, as parents, lawmakers, and advocates on both sides fight for their vision of fairness and equality.
MEDIA BIAS ON FULL DISPLAY
Check out the screenshot below from the Detroit Free Press/USA Today livestream of Former President Trump’s rally in Detroit. Take a look at the top left part of the screen.
There is a disclaimer that read the video has not been fact checked.
The same day, hours later, The Detroit Free Press/USA Today took VP Kamala Harris rally live and they did not air the fact check warning on the screen.
This is a flat out example of media bias. Are they trying to say that VP Kamala Harris doesn’t lie? This is just one reason why I walked away from the mainstream media.
SOCIAL MEDIA CENSORSHIP
Facebook is now censoring the fact that President Biden and VP Harris has failed to connect even one person to the Internet despite leading the Administration’s $42 billion infrastructure plan for 1,000+ days.
Facebook is labeling this “false information,” not because anyone has been connected—no one has—but because the government has been spending money while not connecting anyone. Worse? The fact checker’s only sources are Biden-Harris officials.

Facebook is doing the same thing to Crosses, the Eagle with his head bowed, anything with a prayer in it. It covers them and says graphic content. I have a friend whose account was shut down 4 years ago for no reason. She has a new account and Facebook still targets her. She had a healthy news site and was answering medical questions. She's a Registered Nurse. The post at the top of her page says: I am not prescribing anything. I am answering questions you might have. I suggest anything you read here be discussed with your doctor. Yet, Facebook puts her in jail regularly. Hello, why does Facebook have a jail? I was sited for a post that went against community standards. I sure would like to see those community standards posted somewhere. The post was about a Black woman in the 1800s, she had done something in history. I posted it during Black history month. It was a little known fact. They did apologize but they never put the post back up. I don't know who does the censoring but it appears to be anything that IS the truth is being shut down.
