This was putting the cart before the horse. Let's cut this because, hey they are just farmers. Now that it's done, you're wondering if it was a mistake. It most certainly does. Someone takes their life every 8 minutes in this country. It's twice as high for veterans. I suspect after years of fighting the weather: drought, floods, late season frost or early season frost, it could wear on a person's mental health. At what point do you throw in the towel. Say you inherited the family farm. It's all you've ever known. You're 55 years old and this year's crop won't pay the bills. What are you going to do? Who is going to hire you with no other experience but farming? You're at a cross roads, what do you do, take out a loan to pay what you owe and hope next year is better, or sell the farm?
