Reps grill auditor general over Health Department oversight lapses
Members of the House Oversight Committee at a recent hearing questioned whether the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is using a state-created nonprofit for purposes that go beyond what lawmakers intended when they created it in 1990.
House members heard testimony from three employees of the Office of the Auditor General during a Sept. 22 committee hearing on deficiencies in the department’s oversight of contracts with the Michigan Public Health Institute, an organization created, according to the public health code, “to plan, promote, and coordinate health services research with a public university or a consortium of public universities within the state.”
Yvonne Benn, Chad Monger, and Ivy Jaroche testified on oversight failures including inadequate documentation, payments approved before required work plans were reviewed, and incomplete reporting to the Legislature. Click here to read more.

What Coal Country Can Teach America About Fighting Floc
Paige Reiring showed up at Woodchuck’s house with a revolver strapped to her hip. She didn’t know anything about the man except that he loved America and hated Flock cameras. He’d reached out to Reiring via TikTok after seeing her videos tracking automated license plate readers in the city of Morgantown; he wanted her to come look at a new one in his neighborhood. Reiring told me she brought her gun as insurance—this was West Virginia, after all, and she was “just one lady.”
At first glance, Reiring—a 33-year-old lesbian socialist and third-party candidate for the West Virginia House of Delegates—wouldn’t seem to have much in common with Woodchuck, a proud patriot who decries so-called “Nazi communist bastards” for putting a surveillance camera in front of his yard. But over the course of a 45-minute conversation, the two found they were standing on some solid common ground. Neither thinks mass surveillance has a place in West Virginia. Or, for that matter, anywhere else. Click here to read more.

Meet The Dem Socialists Headed To Congress With A Radical Wish Li
When the Democrats take over Congress in January, they will bring with them a spate of new members who want to abolish ICE, replace capitalism with socialism, and fundamentally transform the American political system.
Voters across the country elected at least five members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to the House on Tuesday, as Democrats swept to power in a massive blue wave that hit even red states like Kansas, South Carolina, and Texas. Here are the five DSA members heading to Congress:
Darializa Avila Chevalier (New York’s 13th Congressional District)
Avila Chevalier, a DSA member backed by New York City Mayor and fellow member Zohran Mamdani, handily won a deep-blue congressional seat encompassing portions of Harlem and the Bronx on Tuesday. Her victory came after she defeated incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat during the Democratic primary. Click here to read more.
Vance says Iran war cost GOP the midterms; Trump says he would have done nothing different
WASHINGTON — Confronted with a tidal wave of Democratic midterm victories that cost Republicans control of Congress, Vice President JD Vance issued a stern missive Wednesday about how his party lost so much support, placing the lion's share of blame on the Iran war – a war he spent eight months justifying to the public.
The president said Vance’s assessment was “largely true” because the war caused a surge in gas prices but stood by his decision to go to war.
“If I had to do it again, I’d have to do it again because long term, it’s the only answer. You can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said. Click here to read more.
