I have said all along the funds in Michigan have been mismanaged to the point of being criminal. It's about time someone took action. I hope they catch the person authorizing this money mismanagement and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. The citizens of Michigan deserve better than this.
Was this some kind of gang ritual? He kept saying he'd been jumped. Is the woman okay? I hope they arrest everyone they can identify in that video and charge them.
I have said for years they were doing the wrong things. It got worse after they adopted the Core Curriculum. Worst thing they have done in education since Reading First and Accelerated Reading. No child age 5-9 should sit in a classroom for reading for 120 solid minutes uninterrupted. Then please don't get me started on Core Curriculum. Whomever invented that was not an educator. Let's start with math, they took a 1967-68 program called modern math and tried to pass it off as something new. Been there, done that during the first experiment with it. One it had us working out of base 3, base 5 and base 7. Our entire system is base 10. Where in real life will I ever use bas 3 or 5? Let's see I was 13-14 when this was taught and I am 71 now, have never needed that useless junk. They also added a monumental amount of reading instead of just giving a story problem. I don't need to know Tommy has blue eyes and glasses if the question you are asking is: If Tommy has a dozen pencils when he starts the day and at the end of the day he only has 7 left. How many did he sell or give away? I need to know he had 12 pencils. He ended up with 7 pencils. He sold or gave away 5. 12-7=5 It ain't rocket science. Give a child struggling to read that many words when simple ones will do is ludicrous! Then we move to reading. They threw out phonics when they went to whole group reading. No one told them to do that. It was just assumed if you were teaching whole group no one was teaching phonics. How is a child supposed to decipher a word if they don't know phonics? That was in the 80s. Then comes 120 minutes of uninterrupted whole group reading. Still no phonics. Oh wait, my kids in the resource room got phonics in small groups. I was individualizing their education. Some even got Orton-Gillingham which is basically a phonics program, and others got EBLI which is Evidence Based Literacy Instruction. Also Core Curriculum is a canned program. Teachers must read instructions exactly as they are in the teacher's manual. So if Susie doesn't understand, the only thing the teacher can do is repeat what has already been said. That's not teaching. That's a recitation. And you wonder why kids are failing and Michigan is now at the bottom of the 50 state barrel? Please go look at what Ron DeSantis had done in Florida to take the 47th state to the #1 slot. Every child has an individual education plan coming out of kindergarten. He had taken kindergarten back to what it used to be, a place for children to learn and explore. He's not making kindergarteners read at a first grade level in kindergarten. They are learning the alphabet, the basic sounds the letters make, they are putting the sounds together, they are learning rhyming words, they are learning to count to 100, they are learning to color and use scissers, they are learning phone numbers, and addresses. You would not believe the number of middle school kids who didn't know their own address when I was teaching. I've been retired since 2010. They learn to write their names. They learn to tell stories to someone who writes them down. Then the teacher prints the story so the student can copy it in their own writing. They learn that every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Then they draw a picture of their story. Kids have vivid imaginations and the current curriculum goes out of it's way to kill that. Instead of giving them a picture of a rose and telling kids to take out a red crayon and color the rose red because roses are red. Why not ask them what color they think the rose should be? Have them find that color in their crayon box. That's the color they use. I understand the child has to know which color is which and there will be things they have to color a specific color so give them a color by number picture. Then give them a box with 8 crayons and the colors are numbered one through eight on the board. Or even a color guide on the paper they are going to color. When finished they should all look alike. It might give you an idea who still needs to work on colors. Again, not rocket science.
I guess I am not surprised by the self-deportations. Although I think those doing it are probably the ones who would be productive citizens and not gang members.
We've spent billions teaching to standardized testing and NOT actually teaching kids the basics needed to survive. Unless we back off screen time and teach reading, writing, math, team building skills, how to get along, how to help others, we are going to remain behind. Give kids back their recesses. They need to blow off steam. Not sit in class for 120 minutes with no breaks. How many adults would do that? Honestly, we have done our children a disservice. Look at Finland. The kids there go to school from 9am-2pm. They have no homework (because it won't come back), they get the basics and are allowed to go home and be kids. There are no standardized tests. There are measured requirements for passing a grade level. Their schools are ranked #1 in the world. They are doing what is right for kids. None of this false grading junk using M for mastery, R for recently introduced, P for progress, I for incomplete, and N for no progress. What the heck does that mean to anyone. By fourth grade when letter grades and percentages are attached. Parents are shocked to learn that P for progress is anything from a D to a B-. Their child could have a 60% to an 80%. Imagine you believe your child is making progress and the report card comes home with D because your child only has 60%. You are most likely livid. I know I would have been. WE quit doing all the things right for kids to push them farther faster when their brains are not ready. WE shut parents out by not being honest with them. WE quit giving parents guidelines that spelled out measurable goals a child needed to pass from one grade to the next. All so we wouldn't hurt the child's feelings. Seriously? Kids have been getting letter grades or percentages for as far back as I can remember. In the UK they gave E for Excellent and F for Failure back in the early 1900s. I know, I have seen my grandfather's report cards. They were filled with Es. I thought he had failed until I read the grading scale on the side or bottom of the report card. He exceled. Do not tell me children get no disappointments in life. Life is filled with disappointments. Why do some kids get cancer as toddlers? How come some of them survive and others don't? How do they cope when the lose in a game? We need more than anything to go back to basics. WE need to promote trade schools, apprenticeships, just as hard as we push college and the military. We need people in all walks of life. NOT everyone needs a college degree. We are going to need more with technology degrees and who understand artificial intelligence. But, we don't need it in kindergarten and first grade unless you are just promoting keyboard familiarity and educational games....but not just for those kids who get all their work done first. Those with disabilities need the same practice. Don't make it a treat for the kids who excel.
Yes, the Department of Education needs to be shutdown. Permanently! Forever! It is run by bureaucrats who know absolutely NOTHING about educating children. How many other professions have a Federal Oversite Office who tell them how to do their jobs? That would be none, zero, zip, zilch. Why in Gods, name would you treat teachers that way? This department did not even exist until President Carter created them. They have been a disaster since the get go. Changing the curriculum to every new fad that comes along every 5 years. Seriously, ludicrous! It takes ten years to get an accurate data base. They have thrown out every possible bit of actual research on how best to teach children in favor of junk fads. I for one am sick of it. Basics are no longer taught. I pray for the next few generations who have been subjected to this shit. Kudos to the states who opted out of Core Curriculum because they saw it for the garbage it is. No one needs a 40 page document to tell them how and what to teach at any grade level. Secondary teachers are EXPERTS at what they teach. To stay certified they have to have 6 credits in continuing education every 5 years. In their first five years they have to have 18 credits just to keep their certification. That's half way to a Masters Degree. Most of them go ahead and get the Masters, giving up their summers and weekends, and evenings to do so. Now they have to get an additional 6 credits to keep their certificates. They generally get an Education Specialist Degree or a Ph.D. after that they can take underwater basket weaving and no one cares. But, school districts are scrambling. They didn't have payrolls that covered an Ed. Specialist or a Ph. D. Now they have to raise the top. I had not had an upward raise in the two years before I retired. I had three years to go to be at the top of the payroll. I wouldn't have made it even if Michigan had not offered a buy-out to the "old" teachers. I retired a year and a half before I would have because I knew the buy-out would be decades before it came again. To qualify for the buy-out your age and years of service had to equal 80. Mine equaled 84. They did not have to ask me twice. I was 56 years old. I was able to pull my full pension starting that summer. I'd already put away summer savings so I'd have money coming in over the summer. The money that came from my savings came on the off weeks from my 26 pays I'd taken as a teacher. I didn't need the pension money until October. Which was a good thing because there was a screw up with my pension. In my favor thank goodness. Department of Education at the federal level is not needed. Every single state has a department of education. Also run by bureaucrats. They haven't got a clue either. Put any of them in a classroom for a week and they'd run screaming at the end of the first day. They have no clue the things teachers have to deal with. Children in abusive homes. Where the children are made to sit on the sofa while dad beats the tar out of mom every night for not being a good mom or wife. Homes where Mom is abusive because Dad took off and they haven't seen him in weeks. Homes where the children are abused. Homes where drugs are an every day thing. Homes where one or the other parent is in or out of jail on a regular basis. Homes where alcohol is the problem. Or where dad or step-dad belongs to the militia and decides one night they all have to die. Maybe the children escape and maybe they don't. What about the day Bobby comes to school all upset because the puppy got into the street and was hit by a car right in front of them. Or the kids who come to school not having had anything to eat since dinner on Sunday. There are other traumas and other situations I could name. With sometimes 33 kids a classroom, these things have to be dealt with before the Pledge to the Flag that starts the school day. Including the kid with the temperature of 101 who rode the bus to school and can barely stand because they are sick and now a busload of 60 kids has been exposed. All this before 9am when the bell rings to start the day. Then the teacher has to shovel out the bureaucratic nonsense some fool in the government thinks is education. Do get me started on all the reasons the Federal Department of Education needs to be obliterated. It's a waste of tax dollars and has been right from the beginning.
I'm not convinced Dana Nessel is correct. Michigan has lost billions in FAP to fraud. It needs to be held accountable. Michigan's antiquated law says mom doesn't have to go to work until the youngest child is 5 years old. If a young girl gives birth at age 16 do you know how many children she can have before the youngest is 5yrs old and she is too old to find employment? She could be 45 years old before that youngest is 5yrs old. Not many people want anyone who most likely has no diploma or GED to work more than part-time and they are going to give her the late shift when she will have to have childcare. On minimum wage. How in the HELL does that make any sense? It should be rewritten to say you have two years to get your diploma or GED and find work. We will give you one additional year of FAP to get on your feet. Then you would lessen the burden on the system, but no that takes common sense something lacking at levels of government in this country. So, what is Dana Nessel hiding???
Forcing in-home caregivers into a union is wrong. Most of them are paid by the patient's insurance company. It is really not a great wage. Yes, a union might get them a better wage, but it's highly unlikely. Most of the caregivers are dependent on a spouse's income to survive. The only ones making money in this field are those who work in administration. Maybe they should be the ones forced into a union. Take a part-time caregiver and make them pay union dues that really do nothing for them and they cannot afford to work. What idiot in Lansing thought this was a good idea? Many caregivers get hired by the family and the family foots the bill but it doesn't mean they get a ton. The family has to pay the company and the company pays minimum wage. Even if the caregiver is full time. Their insurance is rock bottom and comes out of their check every two weeks. This is a wrong move and many needed caregivers will quit. Leaving patients who could be at home stuck in expensive nursing homes where elder abuse runs rampant.
Why am I not surprised that the dad is suspended for calling out a boy (trans or not) competing in a girl's athletic event. Even the President has said that is not to happen. Colleges and Universities have filed federal lawsuits to prevent this from happening. Males who choose to transgender to women have a different musculature. That does not change. Which means they are stealing scholarships from girls who have worked for years to be able to reach the scholarship level. You are also allowing young men (boys) into the girls' locker room to change with them even if they have NOT yet had surgery. That's wrong. On so many levels I can't even begin.
I am glad the pups were rescued. As pups they may not yet have been put in the dog fights. Generally, dogs who are trained to fight are a bit older than pups, two or more years old and they have been taught to fight.
Here we go again. How much is Governor Whitmer going to waste of the tax dollars on this for them to back out? I agree with residents of Ottowa County. NO battery anything there. Nowhere in Michigan. Letting them pollute the Great Lakes would be a travesty of monumental proportions.
Okay, explain to me what are they thinking in the UK that this information was withheld from the public? Best way I know to alienate your citizens is to make them not trust you at all. Secrets do that to people when they come out, people get angry. It would have been better to let them come out to begin with.
I am here to tell you child protective services does not protect children. It hasn't for a very long time. When a judge in Michigan refuses an abortion for an 11 yr old child of incest the child is not being protected. Then a year later when the child has had the baby for a year, said baby is taken away from her because she is an unfit mother. Neither the child or the baby are protected. They end up in different foster homes. I never knew what happened to either one. I had a student in foster care. Every time there was head lice at the school they shaved her head. When the girls there were 3 came up for adoption. The foster parents really only wanted the older two. But it was three or nothing. Another teacher and I both wrote on the recommendation form this permanent placement would be bad for the youngest child and we gave all the reasons why. We were ignored. No one even came to talk to us. When said child was raped in the 11th grade they threw her out of the house leaving her homeless and pregnant. She had a little girl. She was lucky she met a wonderful young man who loved her and her daughter. He married her and adopted her daughter. They now have three other children. She went through Michigan Works and got her diploma in 2017 by then she was the mother of three. She works in a pizza restaurant. Her husband works. Her children are thriving. They have nothing to do with her adoptive parents. She has reconnected with her birth mother and the children have her in-laws. But at no time did MCPS protect this child except for taking her away from a drug addicted mother. When she has education related questions, she still calls me. I believe her oldest daughter is in high school now. She knows the other teacher and I tried to protect her. If I'd thought about it, I probably could have adopted her myself. I had a daughter in college at the time and didn't think about it. In hindsight, I should have. I have learned I cannot save them all.
She could have dropped that baby off at any hospital or fire station and it might have had a fighting chance. She has now ruined two lives. Hers and the baby's. What a waste of human life. I understand Rowe vs Wade has been overturned. We are going to see more and more of this. And young girls are going to be dying in backroom abortion huts where things go wrong.
President Kennedy had a President's Physical Fitness program in every middle school and high school back in the 60s and 70s what happened to that? Oh, toss out with the rest of the bath water. The problem is processed foods. The cereals we feed children in this country, Fruity Pebbles, Cap't Crunch, Lucky Charms, Fruit Loops are for the most part banned in Europe. In the UK a box of Fruity Pebbles carries a dozen warning labels for carcinogens, dyes, and who knows what all that should not be in our food we feed to children. So, why is the Food and Drug Administration allowing this. The answer is in the title of the Administration in charge. Because DRUG companies are going to kill us one way or another. It's like every time the add a dye to your food or your drugs, they add aluminum. They add it to drugs too. I know I am highly allergic to aluminum and it took three years to figure out why my entire body looked like I had been scalded. Every drug but one that my doctors had ordered contained aluminum. I now have to have the doctors write no dye on all my prescriptions. Walmart also knows I cannot have dyes and have it on my profile.
We need to start eating grass fed meat, eggs, fresh vegetables from our own gardens or from the farm down the street. Hormones have to come out of our foods. We need fresh fruits and fresh air. People start walking even if it's just to the corner. Start getting the whole family outside. Play baseball in the backyard. Plant a garden and teach your children how to feed themselves. Cut out the trips to the fast food joints. None of that is good for you. McDonald's has mystery meat. Cut out the excess oils. Especially seed oils. We need to put ourselves first when it comes to food. Betty Crocker's easy potato mixes used to set off migraines in my daughter. We stopped using them. Scalloped potatoes take time to make, but if I want them, I make them from scratch. I make most things from scratch. Dig out an old cookbook, they are much better than the new ones. I have adapted many recipes to account for the fact that I a diabetic. I use almond flour, brown rice flour, and walnut flour for baked goods. I use cassava flour for tortillas. It's not rocket science. I have not made cakes, pies or pastries with alternate flours yet. I do bake bread, English muffins, and bagels with them.
I don't understand how anyone can leave a baby, dog, or cat unattended in a car EVER! The first responsibility of that driver was to transport that child from point A to point B. No one mentioned there would be a four hour break where the little boy would have been left in a hot car alone. This driver should have the book thrown at them literally, then be given the maximum jail sentence. NO MERCY!

NO MERCY!
