I guess I'm a dinosaur. I went to college in the early 1970s. The college I chose to go to had just dumbed down the course work because too many minorities were failing. As someone who was going into teaching, my junior year of college I took Introduction to Black History. I did not have a clue where I might end up teaching and I needed to know the Black history not in my history books. I was early for class and the Professor was already there. He looked at me and said, "I believe you are in the wrong classroom." To which I answered, "I am looking for the Black History class." His next question surprised me, "Why do you want to know about Black history?" Again I replied, "Because I plan to be a teacher and I have no idea where I might end up teaching. I would like to be able to relate to all my students." He then told me to sit right here. In the front row. When everyone was in class and he took attendance, he got to my name and said, "This young woman might one day teach your children and she is here because she wants to know what is not in the history books she's read. She wants to relate to all her students. Please, make her welcome." There was stunned silence before I felt a tap on my shoulder. A young woman behind me said, can we be study buddies? I answered yes. I do not choose my friends for the color of their skin or their ethnic backgrounds. I choose them for the people they are. We spent 16 weeks as study buddies. I was not considered any different from any other student in class by anyone. DEI has never worked. It only divides people. I treasure my friends of color and those with different backgrounds than the one I came from.
SSI is not the same as Social Security. It is Supplemental Security, it never should have been pulled from Social Security. It is meant for the disabled who are unable to work because of a handicap. Many have been getting this since they were children. Some have learned to compensate for their handicap and are slick enough to get cash jobs and not report it. There is a limit to how many part-time hours they can work. You all know the story of the young man who has Downs Syndrome and bags groceries and in every bag he puts a positive note. He can only work about 4 hrs a day. That income in reported and depending on what he gets for SSI it could be reduced by the amount he makes. Most SSI recipients get about $735/mo. Not enough to live on. Those who were not reporting and were discovered by the IRS are the ones they are coming after.
I have a question. If there has been bullying and fighting prior to this incident why is the Superintendent in the dark? Is there a police liaison officer in the building? Where were the teachers who should have been monitoring the hallways? Why has the principal had nothing to say? Sounds like the kids are in charge and not the staff.
I can answer that. Homeschooled children are not subject to ridiculous amounts of worthless testing. In Michigan, the MEAP is given less than 8 weeks into the school year, so the children are being taught to the test during that time. After that real teaching begins about mid-October and continues until Christmas break. When students return they have to be tested on the progress they have made in reading comprehension and word recognition I believe. Then they get the test before semester break. They come back to school after a day off and begin real teaching again. This happens until Easter break. After Easter break teachers are getting them ready for the end of year reading and math test. So teaching to the test. Homeschooled children are not subjected to this nonsense. They get real teaching all year long. Testing comes at the end of chapters or sections in a book. Students in public education are also writing a monthly paper to go into a portfolio to advance with them every year and they get them all back at the end of 12th grade. It a sin. Homeschooled children don't have the stress to perform put on them all the time. MEAP used to be given only in 4th, 7th, and 9th grades. It needs to go back to that because as the current test stands, it has no meaning other than to single out special needs students which happens when the overall scores are released to the newspapers. I had an 8th grade student who came in all upset because the local rag pretty much said special needs students dragged the scores down. Really? How is that responsible reporting?
I have an issue with this. What if you live in a county with no private schools? Or the only private school is a Catholic school that only goes to 8th grade? If you are not Catholic, do you want your child in a Catholic school? Most people don't. There is a problem when not all students can access this type of program. I get they are using property taxes to fund this and Michigan has voted down Vouchers every time they come on the ballot. I don't know how that would fly in Kentucky I've never seen it on a ballot.
