On this edition of Keeping it Real I am digging into new Michigan minimum wage law and paid leave law which many economists say will devastate small business and hurt workers. I also talk about NBC News being caught in a lie and a look at the new Reagan movie.

Keeping It Real Recap: Labor Day Edition
On this special Labor Day edition of "Keeping It Real," we focused on key issues affecting Michigan’s workforce and businesses, including new labor laws set to take effect in February. These laws include a higher minimum wage and mandatory paid sick leave, changes that many experts—from both sides of the political aisle—warn could severely impact Michigan’s economy, businesses, and workers.
New Labor Laws in Michigan
Beginning in February, Michigan will enforce a new minimum wage and paid sick leave law that has sparked heated debate across the state. While supporters argue these measures are necessary for workers' rights, critics—including both Democrat and Republican business owners—believe they could devastate Michigan's economy. Many fear the new regulations could lead to increased costs, staff layoffs, and even business closures.
I spoke with Ian Murphy, the owner of Iron Pig Smokehouse in Gaylord, Michigan, who shared his concerns about these changes. Murphy discussed how eliminating the tip credit and implementing paid sick leave could hurt both his business and his employees, reducing their overall earnings and leading to higher menu prices. The fear is that these policies may drive more restaurants to adopt counter service models, cutting into servers’ tips and changing the dining experience.
Media Bias and Accountability
The show also touched on the importance of media accountability. Recently, NBC’s "Meet the Press" admitted to misleading viewers about Vice President Kamala Harris and President Biden’s attendance at the transfer of 13 American servicemembers killed during the Afghanistan withdrawal. I highlighted this to illustrate how media bias can shape public perception and the importance of holding news organizations accountable when they get it wrong.
A Look Back at Reagan
I also recommended watching the new movie about Ronald Reagan, particularly for younger viewers who may not remember his presidency. Reagan’s approach to leadership and the parallels between his era and today’s political climate offer valuable insights.
The Way Forward
As we navigate these challenging times, it’s crucial for Michigan lawmakers to consider the real-world impacts of these new regulations. Business owners and workers alike are calling for revisions to the proposed laws to make them more manageable for small businesses. The Michigan legislature has the power to make changes, and the hope is for a bipartisan effort to address the concerns raised by business owners.

There is no way a part-time or seasonal employee should have sick leave paid for. I had to earn my sick leave for 7 years when I worked full-time at a Flint hospital. As a teacher, I was given 5 sick days and 2 personal days a year. Any unused sick days transferred over. Personal days did not. Welcome to the real world.
The media ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CNN, and most others have been lying to us for years.
The fact that people are now waking up to it is sad. You are being fed a can of worms. You really know nothing about either candidate if you don't actually do the research. Not a Google search or looking at Wikipedia. You might need to go to a library and check out books.
A little known fact about young Donald Trump the up and coming real estate sales men in California is that a young couple had a son with a rare medical condition & at 3 yrs old was dying. No commercial air line would fly them to New York City for the only treatment that would save his life. Donald Trump had seats removed and medical equipment put on boatlrd his personal plane. Nurses were given sears near the boy in case of emergency and the parents were seated next to their sons. The boy was given a new drug over several days. He recovered somewhat but, not like they had hoped. They boy lived 7 more years and was able to do some things. Mr. & Mrs. Trump attended the funeral. Former President Trump will not allow this story to be used in his in his political campaign. It was not used in 2020. He feels the family needs to be left alone.
I will have to watch the movie about Ronald Reagan. I am not one for doumentaries. While the people may have remarkable, I find documentaries dull and boring.
👏 👏 yes finally! When I keep telling people to do their research they always say I do/I did—where? Google. 😂 like you said, go to a library if you have to but there are ways to filter out the false news online although people not in the tech/cyber/ethical hacking industry probably do not know anything about them or how to do it. And if there were a way to guarantee nobody at all voted in elections this year, that is what I would say do, until they started listening better to what the population wants instead of what they want or think we want.
People also believe most everything they are told and do not understand we can’t even believe most of what we see anymore.
