My adventures in TV news
From Evansville, Indiana to Wilmington, North Carolina and several other places.
When I graduated from Eastern Michigan University I knew I would most likely have to leave Michigan if I wanted to work in television.
I had no idea the voyage would send me to five states and seven television stations.
Working in TV is somewhat like being in the military when it comes to moving around the country.
Most TV stations require employees to sign a two-year contract.
I have worked at the following TV stations:
WEVV- Evansville, Indiana
WECT- Wilmington, NC
WUPW, Toledo, Ohio
WNEM- Saginaw, MI
WBRC- Birmingham, Alabama.
WPXI - Pittsburgh, PA
WEYI- Flint, Michigan
My goal while working at most of those stations was to end up working in my hometown market of Detroit.
In life, things happen that you don’t expect.
NBC25 legendary anchor Bill Harris posted on Facebook that the station was hiring for an anchor/reporter.
My contract was coming up at WPXI in Pittsburgh and while I wanted to remain in Pittsburgh I would roll the dice and apply back in my home state and see what happens.
I ended up getting the job, working as an anchor for FOX66/NBC25 in Flint, Michigan and have been here for six-plus years and don’t see myself going anywhere anytime soon.
I added the role of digital content manager three years ago and continue in that role and the role of anchor and reporter.
I started my journey in television news a single guy in an apartment playing with my PlayStation, now I find myself married with two amazing kids and an amazingly beautiful wife.
I met my wife Katie while working at a tv station in Saginaw in 2003.
Katie has been on this amazing wild ride with me as well moving from Michigan to Alabama, then Pennsylvania, and then back home to Michigan.
My goal at every television station has always been to tell every side of a story and to remain unbiased and impartial.
When I was a child I remember going around the neighborhood interviewing neighbors with my fake microphone and camera.
Even at the young age of eight, I was interested in breaking news and always wanted to be where the action was. Feature stories were ok, but I was all about the excitement and action.
I am an extremely lucky person.
When I was young I wanted to work in TV news, have a family and be happy.
I have accomplished all of those things and will continue to work to make sure my children are more successful in life than I have been.
I have no idea what the future holds but I do know I will continue to push to have the same values I have always had and be the best I can be.
I leave you with this music video.
“Don’t Blink” makes you realize just how quickly life moves.
