Law suit against the school should be in the works already. Filed by both sets of parents. That is the most illegal thing I have ever heard a school do it my lifetime. Parents MUST be present especially if the students are minors. They can also be represented by an attorney. I don't think Michigan law has changed that much in 15 years.
I googled Michigan school law on this issue. They haven't changed. Parental notification must be served before a student can be interviewed by police unless the student is a victim. The school MUST have a signed waiver from the parent if they cannot be present for the interview. That's just for starters. Telling a student not to tell their parents about the interview is illegal. File a lawsuit against the school and the law enforcement officer who broke the law.
I just googled the law. The school district violated so many of Michigan's laws it's not funny. Parents must sign a waiver if they cannot be there during questioning. Questioning cannot happen without parental consent. That's just for starters. Tell mom to hire a lawyer and have her ask the other parent to do so also. Would be great if they hired the lawyer together.

By the way the attorney telling them not to tell their parents, that's also illegal.
Not one bit surprised same thing happened at Handy in Bay City.
