Michigan Vaccine Choice Group Advocates for New Legislation to Protect Parental Rights
Group pushes lawmakers to act on parental rights.
LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan-based advocacy group is pushing for legislation to strengthen parental rights when it comes to childhood vaccinations. The organization, Michigan for Vaccine Choice, says its mission is to ensure parents can make informed medical decisions for their children without state interference.

Connie Johnson, who serves as the group’s acting director of media, marketing, and communications, said the organization was founded in 2015 following a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services rule that directed parents to local health departments for vaccine waivers. Johnson argues the rule contradicts state law.
"Michigan law allows for medical, religious, and philosophical exemptions," Johnson said. "But the state health department has inserted itself into a process that should remain between parents and schools."
The group supports House Bill 4475, which would add vaccination status as a protected class under Michigan law. Johnson said the measure has bipartisan support and would prevent discrimination based on vaccine status in schools, hospitals, and public services.

"We’re not anti-vaccine," Johnson emphasized. "We believe in choice. This is a private conversation that should happen between a patient and their doctor—not a mandate from politicians or public agencies."
Johnson said the group has over 30,000 members statewide and operates almost entirely through volunteer efforts. They work directly with parents and legislators to help families understand and exercise their rights under Michigan law.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Johnson said the group witnessed increasing government overreach through administrative rules. "Governor Whitmer lost power to issue executive orders but continued mandates through the health department," she said.
She also expressed concerns about how exemptions are tracked in Michigan, citing privacy issues related to the Michigan Care Improvement Registry. According to Johnson, some local health departments have been inputting exemption data without clear legislative authority.
Michigan for Vaccine Choice is hosting a legislative day at the Capitol on June 10, where members and supporters plan to meet with lawmakers and raise awareness about their cause.
More information about the group, including how to become a member or attend events, is available on their website at michiganvaccinechoice.org.
“Our message is simple,” Johnson said. “Parents deserve the right to choose what’s best for their children.”

Where were these people in 1954? I was allergic to baby vaccines. Did they stop giving them? Hell, no! They gave me twice as many by cutting them in half. This is most likely the reason that as an adult I am allergic to almost anything new put into my system. I'm the heart patient who cannot take most heart meds. I am the diabetic who cannot take diabetic meds. And it took me 15 years to get off Metformin....the result...I have chronic kidney disease. I told them kidney disease ran in my family, yet the put me on Metformin at the highest dosage anyway. Now the damage is done. I want the med pulled off the market last year. I hate vaccines. Did my daughter get them, yes. Did she have allergic reactions, NO, that God. I'd have stopped them the minute she did. I have an indentation in my leg from vaccines. It's been there for all of my life.
