The staffing situation at Michigan prisons is dangerously low according to corrections officers who contacted me via social media. The Michigan Department of Corrections currently operates 31 prisons in the State of Michigan, holding just over 43,000 offenders. Thirty of these prisons are dedicated to preserving male offenders, while one facility has roughly 2,100 female offenders currently incarcerated by the MDOC.

Corrections officers tell me they are having to work mandated overtime. I am told staffing levels are creating for possibly dangerous situations not only for the employees inside the prisons but for the general public.

I talked to Corrections Officer and Union President Bryan Osborn who is urging Governor Whitmer and state lawmakers to do something about this crisis before tragedy strikes.
