Michigan Mother Says Son Suffered ‘Vaccine Injury,’ Urges Parents to Research

HOLLY, Mich. — A Holly, Michigan mother says her young son suffered a “vaccine injury” that changed his life overnight, and she is urging other parents to dig deeper into the risks before agreeing to routine childhood shots.
Alyssa Barry said her son was 12 months old in 2018 when he received three vaccinations during one pediatrician visit — hepatitis A, MMR and varicella. Within a week, she said, he developed high fevers, severe bowel issues, stopped talking, lost developmental milestones and began exhibiting unusual behaviors.
“He went from saying ‘mama’ and ‘dada’ to no speech at all,” Barry said. “He stopped making eye contact and would just spin wheels and line toys up. It was like a switch flipped.”

Barry said her pediatrician dismissed the symptoms as a normal response to vaccination and offered only brief CDC fact sheets when she asked for more information. When she demanded the full manufacturer inserts — which she says are required to be kept on-site — she was initially told she could not take them home, so she photographed them in the office.
After working with a functional medicine doctor, Barry said testing showed her son had high levels of aluminum and other toxins. Following a lengthy detox protocol, she said, he regained speech and motor skills and has now graduated from occupational, physical and speech therapy.
Barry emphasizes she was not opposed to vaccines before the incident. “We did what we were taught was best, and it ended up not being best for him,” she said. “Every child is different. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.”
She also raised concerns about what she says are financial incentives for pediatricians to keep vaccination rates high, citing a 2025 Meridian Health Plan provider handbook that outlines per-patient bonuses for meeting immunization benchmarks. The American Academy of Pediatrics states most pediatricians break even or lose money when offering vaccines.
Barry’s message to new parents is simple: research vaccines using original manufacturer data submitted to the FDA. “I researched every product we used for infants,” she said. “I did not research what was being injected into them. Don’t just accept that this is how it is.”
Barry said she has received both pushback and support since going public. “We’ve heard from so many families who have lived the same story,” she said. “If sharing what happened to us makes even one parent stop and do their research, it’s worth it.”
