Michigan lawmakers consider new limits on BB and pellet guns for minors
Proposal would update state guidelines for minors.
LANSING, Mich. — A newly introduced bill in the Michigan House would prohibit anyone under 18 from using or possessing a BB gun or pellet gun outside their own property unless accompanied by an adult.
House Bill 5285, introduced by Rep. Julie Rogers, a Democrat from the 41st District, defines “pneumatic gun” as any device designed as a gun that fires a BB or pellet using spring pressure, gas or air. Under the proposal, minors could still use these guns within the curtilage of their home but would be barred from carrying or firing them in public spaces without adult supervision.

A violation would be a misdemeanor, carrying a penalty of up to 90 days in jail, a fine of up to 500 dollars or both.
Supporters say the measure is aimed at reducing accidents and youth-related incidents involving air-powered guns in public places. Critics argue the change goes too far by criminalizing typical youth activities and treating BB and pellet guns similarly to firearms.
The bill was introduced on November 13 and sent to the House Government Operations Committee for consideration. It is expected to draw input from safety advocates, youth recreational groups and law enforcement as it moves through the House.
