Michigan Farmer Battles State Overreach, Advocates for Food Freedom
Veteran-turned-farmer says Michigan tried to label his pigs "feral," fine him $700,000, and shut down his farm in a battle over food freedom and government control.
A northern Michigan farmer is speaking out about what he calls government overreach, saying the state tried to shut down his small family farm more than a decade ago through a set of regulations that threatened his livelihood and way of life.
Mark Baker, a former U.S. Air Force veteran who now operates Baker’s Green Acres in Missaukee County, said his trouble with the state began when the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued an Invasive Species Order in 2010 targeting what they called "feral swine."
