LANSING, Mich. — A group of nine Michigan House Democrats has introduced legislation that would prohibit public schools from employing certain federal officers.
House Bill 6209, introduced July 3 by Rep. Erin Byrnes, would amend the Revised School Code by adding a new Section 1230j. According to the bill’s title and summary, the legislation would prohibit schools from employing certain federal officers.
The bill is sponsored by Byrnes and Reps. Laurie Pohutsky, Jimmie Wilson Jr., Dylan Wegela, Emily Dievendorf, Phil Skaggs, Helena Scott, Carrie Rheingans and Regina Weiss.
House Bill 6209 was read for the first time on July 3 and referred to the House Government Operations Committee, where it awaits further consideration.
According to the official legislative summary, the proposal would add a new section to the Revised School Code. The summary does not identify which federal officers would be covered by the proposed prohibition or provide additional details about how the provision would be implemented.
House Bill 6209 is part of a four-bill legislative package introduced the same day. The related measures include House Bill 6208, which would prohibit certain federal employees from being licensed as certain law enforcement officers; House Bill 6210, which would prohibit certain federal employees from being certified or recertified as state correctional officers; and House Bill 6211, which would prohibit certain federal employees from being certified or recertified as local correctional officers.
The legislation has not received a committee hearing or vote. To become law, it would need approval from both the Michigan House and Senate before being signed by the governor.
