GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - Brandon Ortiz-Vite, 25, was charged with felony murder and carjacking related to the shooting death of 25-year-old Ruby Garcia, whose body was found next to a freeway in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ortiz-Vite, who was arrested by Michigan State Police and is reportedly in the U.S. illegally, was denied bond at his arraignment.

According to court records, Ortiz-Vite confessed to killing Garcia, with whom he had a dating relationship, using an illegally purchased handgun.

A citizen of Mexico, Ortiz-Vite was deported from the U.S. by the Trump administration in 2020 but returned illegally, federal officials said Tuesday.
