Man killed, woman injured in shooting at Great Lakes Crossing; investigators say confrontation preceded gunfire
Authorities say fatal shooting followed altercation in food court bathroom; concealed pistol license holder cooperating with investigators.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — A 20-year-old Pontiac man was killed and a 19-year-old woman was wounded Saturday after a shooting inside the food court at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, authorities said.
Auburn Hills police officers were patrolling the mall at about 5:20 p.m. when they received reports of gunfire in the food court, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers found the 20-year-old man dead at the scene and a 19-year-old woman suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Police also took into custody a 22-year-old Detroit man who holds a Michigan concealed pistol license. Authorities said the man is cooperating with investigators.
Investigators said the shooter and the deceased man had been involved in an earlier altercation inside a food court restroom. Police said the deceased man and another unidentified man later encountered the shooter in the food court common area and allegedly attacked him.
A physical fight involving the three men was underway when the shooting occurred, investigators said.
Following the shooting, law enforcement officers evacuated and searched the mall as a precaution. Authorities said there were no additional reports of injuries or other shooters, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
“This was an isolated, tragic incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Witness video posted to social media showed shoppers running from the food court as officers responded to the scene.
Great Lakes Crossing Outlets remained closed Saturday night while investigators processed the scene.
The case will be submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review of possible charges.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office thanked law enforcement agencies from across the county, Great Lakes Crossing security personnel and the Auburn Hills Fire Department for assisting with the response.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about the incident is asked to contact the Auburn Hills Police Department at 248-370-9444.
