Keeping it Real: North Carolina Hurricane Volunteer speaks out and a look at continued media bias
Sunday October 13, 2024
Every Sunday and Thursday, I bring you a new episode of Keeping it Real. In this show, I explore stories that often go untold and uncover important truths. Recently, I spoke with a volunteer and resident from Western North Carolina who shared their firsthand experience helping victims of the catastrophic flooding in the region.
Beyond these important local stories, I continue my deep dive into media bias, examining how coverage shapes public perception. Thank you for following along—I’m glad to have you here!
WATCH MY ENTIRE SHOW:
Interview with Western North Carolina resident and volunteer:
Hendersonville, NC — Chris, a local resident, recounted the severe impact of a recent hurricane on North Carolina during an interview. Heavy rainfall, fallen trees, and flooded roads blocked access to many areas, forcing Chris to take shelter in his car during the storm. "It looked like a war zone," he said, describing snapped power poles and extensive damage.
Despite the challenges, Chris highlighted the community’s resilience, with neighbors working together to clear debris and distribute supplies. However, he noted frustrations with the slow response from FEMA and other government agencies, leaving many isolated residents waiting for help in remote areas near the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Efforts to restore power and infrastructure are ongoing, but the scale of recovery will likely take years. Volunteers, including Samaritan’s Purse and the Cajun Navy, are actively helping in the hardest-hit areas. Residents like Chris emphasized the need for coordinated relief efforts, urging people to connect with local organizations rather than arriving without a plan.
“We’re on our own, but the people here are strong,” Chris concluded, expressing gratitude for the volunteers and neighbors making a difference in the aftermath.
ABC News and J.D. Vance interview:
In the recent This Week interview, J.D. Vance effectively pushed back against what he viewed as Martha Raddatz’s dismissive attitude toward the serious issue of Venezuelan gangs operating in Aurora, Colorado. Vance criticized Raddatz for focusing more on Donald Trump’s phrasing than on the troubling reality of violent gangs infiltrating American communities, even if on a smaller scale.
Vance argued that Raddatz’s emphasis on technicalities, such as the mayor’s rejection of the term "invasion," overlooked the broader concern: gangs are posing a real threat, and Americans have legitimate frustrations with the country’s current immigration policies. He contended that downplaying crime in these apartment complexes was emblematic of a media trend that prioritizes fact-checking Trump over addressing real public safety issues. His response resonated with those who feel that the border crisis and crime should take precedence over political nitpicking.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer weird viral video controversy:
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer faced backlash after participating in a viral video where she fed a Dorito to podcaster Liz Plank in a manner resembling Catholic Communion. The video, intended to promote the CHIPS Act, showed Plank kneeling as Whitmer placed the chip on her tongue, which many Catholic leaders criticized as mocking a sacred ritual.
The Michigan Catholic Conference condemned the skit, with its president, Paul Long, stating that it was offensive and disrespectful to Catholic beliefs. Whitmer responded by apologizing, stating that her intent was not to denigrate anyone's faith. She emphasized that the video was meant to highlight the importance of semiconductor manufacturing and apologized for any unintended offense it caused. However, criticism persisted from those who viewed the act as insensitive to religious practices, with defenders arguing that it was simply part of a TikTok trend involving food-sharing skits.
This controversy highlights the tension between political messaging through social media trends and the respect for religious traditions, with Whitmer attempting to address the backlash through her apology while clarifying the video’s intent

Witless just proved how worthless she really is. The ad is disgusting. It's tasteless and senseless and if this is how she views Kamala Harris, they are both dead in the water.
Kudos to JD Vance for putting the reporter in her place. These gangs are even chasing the building managers out and setting up their ugly gang turf. This is wrong. We are encouraging criminals and Kamala Harris seems to think it will just go away if she becomes the president. She is part of the bigger problem.
