Sheriff blames open border for increase in crime

PONTIAC, Mich -  Criminal gangs from central and south America are taking advantage of lax US immigration laws to set up in cities across the nation and steal from hardworking citizens, warns Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

Organized thieves from Chile are reportedly targeting high-end homes in Metro Detroit, including Oakland County, breaking in and stealing valuables while eluding security systems and avoiding capture.

These crews, responsible for numerous thefts in Michigan and beyond, focus on million-dollar homes with thick landscaping, backing up to wooded areas or golf courses.

The thieves stake out houses in such areas and enter nonconfrontationally through glass doors and windows, sometimes using ladders for second-floor entry. They employ jammers to block wireless alarm systems and other security measures.

Despite dozens of reported break-ins since September, the thieves tend to flee if they sense any disturbance during the break-in.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard believes the group that's targeted homes in Oakland County are of Chilean origin based on recent arrests of another gang in the county. The sheriff said four suspects tied to a separate jewelry theft ring were from Chile. Other apprehensions made in other states have also been tied to Oakland County robberies.

The sheriff said the thieves have been identified as nationals from Venezuela, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Honduras.

He claimed a similar gang had struck in New York, where officials have also called on the federal government to act on the border following an influx of migrants settling into the Empire State.
