Now onto the story…….
CHICAGO, IL — Cata Truss, a community activist and former Democrat from Chicago, says she no longer feels safe in her own neighborhood and believes the city is heading in the wrong direction. In an interview, Truss recalled how her husband was robbed at gunpoint just four blocks from Mayor Brandon Johnson’s residence. Security cameras captured the incident outside her home.
“I’m not talking about what I think, I’m talking about what I know,” Truss said. “I’m talking about living in fear, afraid to walk out of my house now because that happened right there. It wasn’t some blocks away. It wasn’t another neighborhood. It was where I live, in front of my house.”
Her comments come amid a heated debate over public safety in Chicago. Over the Labor Day weekend, 58 people were shot, eight of them fatally, according to police reports. The violence fueled calls from some residents and political leaders for stronger action to curb crime.
President Donald Trump has seized on the unrest in Chicago to argue for federal intervention. This week, he said he was prepared to send National Guard troops into the city, saying he has a constitutional duty to keep Americans safe. Trump has previously pointed to Washington, D.C., where federal forces were deployed, as an example of restoring order.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has vowed to challenge any attempt to deploy the Guard, calling it unconstitutional and promising to go to court if necessary【7†source】. Mayor Johnson has also resisted the idea, instead emphasizing community programs and youth engagement. He recently rejected calls for a citywide curfew, arguing that “our children don’t need the police and regulations.”
Truss, however, expressed frustration with that approach. She believes leaders are downplaying the scale of the violence and leaving residents vulnerable. “So to have someone stand and say, after you see 54 people shot over the weekend … that the city is safe, it’s ludicrous,” she said.
She argues that too many politicians benefit from maintaining the status quo, while neighborhoods like hers bear the consequences. For Truss, that frustration has shifted her political loyalties. Once a Democrat, she now supports Trump, saying his promises to send in federal resources are more aligned with the urgent needs she sees daily.
Her perspective underscores a broader political dynamic. While city leaders have resisted outside intervention, some Chicago residents are voicing support for it, reflecting deep divides over how to address public safety. Trump’s call to deploy the National Guard has also become a political flashpoint nationally, with his administration defending the proposal and critics warning it could escalate tensions rather than calm them.
For Truss, the issue is personal. Living just blocks from the mayor’s home has not shielded her family from violence. “Everyone should be able to feel safe in their neighborhood,” she said.

Ms. Truss is correct. Everyone should feel safe where they live. If they don't it is the mayor and the governor's place to do something about it. 54 souls died in Chicago in three days over a holiday. How many were tourists? I have issues believing this is such an issue. Maybe I'm naive, but if I lived within the same block as the mayor of a large city, I wouldn't expect to see someone on my ring camera get mugged, assaulted, robbed or whatever violence is happening.
