Central Michigan University Police Investigate Posts, Some Question How Situation Was Handled

Police emphasize campus safety as some question how quickly information was shared

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. — Police at Central Michigan University say they are investigating concerning comments made on the school’s social media accounts, while emphasizing there is no active threat to campus.

The Central Michigan University Police Department said the posts, first identified Sunday afternoon, led to an ongoing investigation involving multiple university departments.

Officials say additional safety measures have been put in place as a precaution.

“At this time, there is no indication that an imminent threat exists,” police said in a statement.

Some students and community members have expressed concern about how the situation was communicated, saying they would have preferred quicker or clearer updates after the posts appeared.

University leaders say the Central Alert system remains the primary way to notify students and staff in the event of a verified danger, and they are encouraging everyone to make sure their contact information is up to date.

Support services are also being made available. The university’s Counseling Center and on-campus care teams are offering assistance to students who may feel uneasy following the incident.
