BREAKING: President Biden reverses course and pardons son Hunter
President Biden pardons Hunter Biden, citing political bias and a desire to protect his family amid ongoing legal battles.
WASHINGTON — In a surprise move Sunday night, President Joe Biden issued a full and unconditional pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, ahead of his sentencing on federal gun and tax charges. The decision marks a reversal for the president, who had previously stated he would not use his executive authority to pardon his son.
In a statement, Biden defended his decision, citing "raw politics" and "a miscarriage of justice" in Hunter’s legal cases. "As I wrestled with this decision, I realized that in trying to break Hunter, they were also trying to break me," he said. Biden also highlighted Hunter’s five-and-a-half years of sobriety and resilience in the face of personal and public challenges.
Hunter Biden was set to be sentenced on Dec. 12 for gun charges and on Dec. 16 for tax evasion charges. Combined, the charges carry a maximum sentence of 42 years, though such penalties are rarely fully imposed. The pardon ensures Hunter will not face prison time.

The move comes after months of speculation and criticism from political opponents who accused Hunter of receiving preferential treatment due to his father’s position. Republicans have long scrutinized Hunter’s business dealings and legal troubles, alleging corruption and undue influence. The controversy intensified after a plea deal collapsed in July 2023, prompting Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel in the case.
Biden’s pardon decision was reportedly made over the weekend, with senior White House aides being informed on Sunday. The president had previously ruled out clemency for his son, stating in June, "I will not pardon him." First Lady Jill Biden echoed this sentiment, saying they both respected the judicial system.
The pardon drew sharp criticism from Republicans, who accused the president of undermining justice. Biden, however, defended his action as a necessary step to address what he described as an "unjust process" influenced by political motives.
The decision to pardon Hunter Biden comes as Joe Biden nears the end of his term and steps away from political campaigns, following his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race in July. Analysts suggest the timing was intended to minimize political fallout for the Democratic Party, particularly for Vice President Kamala Harris, who assumed the party’s nomination.
While Biden acknowledged the potential backlash, he emphasized the importance of fairness and family. "I hope Americans will understand why a father and a president would come to this decision," he said.

Uh… wouldn’t that be called a lie… what else is new!!! Thanks Bondy for all you do!!!
How is that even legal or ethical? When it is a family member, that is called a conflict of interest. I am an ordained Minister and am getting married soon. I am able to marry people. Does what's happening in the B case mean that I can also marry myself to my soon to be husband? LOL . It appears so. :-)
