FLINT, Mich – In a heart-wrenching incident on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, three-year-old Skye McBride suffered a critical gunshot wound to the head while her family says she was in the custody of her father. The tragedy unfolded family members say due to an unsecured firearm in their home, leaving the family and community in shock.

Michael Darktania Tolbert, 44, has been charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree child abuse and violations related to firearms safety and possession by a felon.
This case marks the first application of Michigan’s new safe-storage law, which came into effect just a day before the incident, on February 13th.
Tolbert is currently detained with a bond set at $50k, and authorities have seized multiple loaded firearms from the home.
