$250 Million in Taxpayer Money Allocated to Michigan mystery project
Those in opposition cite a lack of transparency
MUNDY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – For those unfamiliar with Michigan, Mundy Township is located near Flint, close to Bishop Airport. This area has been earmarked for a significant development project known as a "mega site." The state of Michigan has recently approved a $250 million allocation for this project, which remains shrouded in mystery.
The mega site, a vast industrial development, lacks transparency regarding its intended purpose. Despite the substantial taxpayer investment, details about what will occupy the site are scarce. Marjorie Steele, an expert on this matter, explains that mega sites typically target industries like EV battery manufacturing and semiconductor production, both of which are water-intensive.

There has been public outcry over the lack of environmental assessments and clarity on where the water needed for these operations will come from. Critics argue that without proper due diligence, the project could lead to long-term environmental and economic repercussions.
The Michigan Strategic Fund Board approved the funding, bypassing typical legislative scrutiny. The money is intended for land acquisition and professional services, but the specifics remain vague.
Chad Young, Mundy Township's manager, clarified that the township has not received any applications or requests for specific projects related to the mega site. He emphasized that the township has no direct control over the state grant money and that further inquiries should be directed to the Flint and Genesee Economic Alliance and the Michigan Strategic Fund.
The situation in Mundy Township reflects broader concerns about similar projects across the country, where taxpayer money is allocated without sufficient oversight or public input. Critics call for greater transparency and caution against the potential pitfalls of such large-scale, speculative investments.
